The steel structure that will form the skeleton of the joint £15 million Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU) and University of Liverpool Sensor City development is taking shape.

Located directly next to Liverpool Lime Street, ideally situated between the two institutions, and within strolling distance of Liverpool Science Park, Sensor City will become an imposing yet fitting gateway to Liverpool’s Knowledge Quarter from the city centre. It will also become the centrepiece of LJMU’s ‘connected university campus village’ and will connect LJMU’s Byrom Street and Mount Pleasant campuses.

Once open, Sensor City will lead the way in pioneering sensor technology for the UK as a whole. With sensor technology being developed across all industries, with everything from home security systems to medical technology and high value manufacturing, Sensor City is anticipated to create 1,000 jobs and accommodate 300 new businesses over a ten year period, ensuring opportunities for future generations and for Liverpool’s status of academic and technical expertise.

Professor Nigel Weatherill, Vice-Chancellor and chief executive of LJMU, commented:
“This building is about investing in the city of Liverpool and the people of Liverpool. It’s a statement about the importance of education here in the 21st Century in the city region.”
